HCD2021 Round Table Discussion on "benchmarking" on-stage and off-stage clniic work cores

What do we mean by "On-stage/Off-stage", and do we really agree as an Industry on the definition? More specifically, how do we establish a meaningful "Benchmarking" process between "On-stage" and "Off-stage" Clinic work core types? At this year's HCD Expo, the AIA Academy of Architecture for Health's Research Initiatives Committee will be giving a brief update on the AIA/AAH Case Study Library and our Acute Care D&T Departmental Benchmarking efforts; however we hope to focus on discussing our specific efforts to identify a rigorous benchmarking process in determining quantitative and qualitative comparisons between clinic types.

Please join us next Tuesday, October 26th at 8:15 AM for a Round Table Discussion on "on-stage/off-stage" benchmarking issues and possible comparative processes. We want your input!

What's "ON-STAGE" and what's "OFF-STAGE" or a Hybrid, and how do you compare Benchmarking and Net to Gross Processes?    Please join us at 8:15 AM on Tuesday, October 26th at HCD2021 for a LIVELY Roundtable Discussion on BENCHMARKING for Outpatient Clinics, and our Committee's attempt to develop a qualitative and quantitative BENCHMARKING tool.

I wish I could sit in on this discussion – unfortunately I won't be able to attend HCD this year.  Several years ago one of our healthcare clients had us conduct a series of test fits for new clinical space in a shell and core MOB to verify this very topic.  They added one more element to the evaluation of the results – what was the potential return on investment (ROI) to the physician owners of the clinic.  The physicians wanted to know which layout (we actually developed four concept schemes) would afford them the most patient revenue from the perspective of seeing the greatest number of patients during the day.  The layout that appeared to offer the most return, needless to say, was not the on-stage/off-stage concept.

Each concept used standardized Exam Rooms and support spaces for staff, Clean Storage, Soiled Holding, Break Rooms, Waiting, Reception, etc., so that an accurate comparison of spaces could be conducted.  All room sizes being similar between concepts, the comparison boiled down to circulation requirements and access to everything.  That client is still using the study conducted as they move forward with new clinical spaces with the idea that physician owners are looking mostly for return on investments more than they are on patient-centered designs (not that the spaces are unattractive, just more of them).

    Hi Byron,
I wasn't able to attend your October 26 session on benchmarking comparisons of on-stage/off-stage designs. Do you have any information you could share on the topic?
    All the best,
    Mike
