  • 1.  Design of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine?

    Posted 05-04-2020 05:37 PM
Are there any Design Guidelines or Regulations related to building new Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine?

I am a University Architect and we are in Schematic Phase for a new Medical School building. I was used to designing hospitals, but this is a bit of a mix between Higher Education and Healthcare since we will have Cadaver Labs, and Simulation Suites for LDRP, OR and General Practice.

The Dean of the new program refers to the COCA Accreditation Standards for area of s.f. per student, etc. but the information I've found at COCA's web site only defines setting up the college curriculum and gives no information about minimal size of spaces, requirements for sinks, locker rooms, etc. for the built environment.  I am accustomed to referencing Building & Construction Standards for Healthcare Facilities which contain those types of design criteria.

Anyone who has designed a Medical School or experience with this building type, please let me know. I thank you.

RDG Planning and Design is designing a new campus for Des Moines University https://www.dmu.edu/new-campus/ in Des Moines (naturally).  this is an Osteopathic medical school.  Perhaps they may have some insight.

    Good luck,

    Kathryn,

I developed a complex spreadsheet space model for the expansion of the University of Cincinnati School of Medicine several years ago.  Would be glad to share if it would be helpful.

    William,
Thank you for replying to me. I did go to your link and the site is extremely well executed, organized and dynamic. I have a special interest in this location since both sides of my family are from Iowa and the State Fair in Des Moines is one of the best memories I have of Iowa. Most of my relatives are now in rural Illinois directly across the river from Burlington, Iowa and have had to travel to Des Moines for major medical care over the years.
Again, thank you. I appreciate the information and wish you a successful project. I will be checking on it as you progress.
    Katrina
