Who we are

The Committee on the Environment (COTE®) is an AIA Knowledge Community working for architects, allied professionals, and the public to achieve climate action and climate justice through design. We believe that design excellence is the foundation of a healthy, sustainable, and equitable future. Our work promotes design strategies that empower all AIA members to realize the best social and environmental outcomes with the clients and the communities they serve.

Performance-based Targets for Commercial New Construction: The Building Owner's Perspective

    Register here!

This webinar will explore the growing trend of building owners and developers moving toward performance-based energy metrics for new construction and major renovation projects to achieve superior performing buildings. It will highlight how an integrative process-through all project phases and involving all building stakeholders-can reduce costs and streamline decision making.

    • EPA will present the lifecycle approach using ENERGY STAR metrics and tools to set design energy targets that inform operational performance, and discuss lessons learned from analysis of ENERGY STAR certifications for design energy and actual performance.
    • Slipstream will share experience in designing and implementing performance-based procurement programs through utility energy efficiency offerings as well as best-practices for selecting targets and adapting the process for various building types and owners/developers.
    • Mayo Clinic will discuss how they leveraged an energy use intensity target to select design strategies from competing proposals, the design team's RFP, contractor selection process, and drafting contract language.  They will share how this approach helped to balance aesthetics, performance, and budget, while maximizing the energy performance of the facility and meeting occupants' needs.

    Speakers:
    • Karen P. Butler, EPA
    • Brett Gorden, PE, MBA, Section Head - Facilities Management, Mayo Clinic
    • Lee Shaver, Energy Engineer, Slipstream
    • Travis Michalke, PE, Senior Managing Consultant, Building Energy Analytics, ICF
