a COTE Conversation with AIA presidents Frederick & Maxman

For the latest issue of COTE news, I had the great privilege to have a conversation with two AIA presidents. Jane Frederick, FAIA, is the current president, and Susan Maxman, FAIA, was president in 1993. We talked about the current urgent climate crisis and what was happening in the early 1990s, when ideas about climate-responsive design that had been percolating for decades were bubbling toward a market transformation.

These women -- two of just five females to lead the AIA in its entire history -- have been at the helm in times of great change. We spoke before COVID-19 hit and its economic impact began to reveal itself, but a global pandemic and recession are perhaps reasonable preparation for the effects of climate change on our communities, economies, and lives.
