Who we are

The Committee on Design (COD) was founded to promote design excellence among members of the AIA, the broader design community, and the public at large, both nationally and internationally.

Announcement: 2020 COD Conferences

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the AIA Committee on Design leadership voted to postpone the domestic and international conferences to 2021. The new dates for the conferences are Denver, May 13 to 16, and Singapore, October 9 to 22.

The COTE Measures are now the AIA's Framework for Design Excellence, and our COTE news series on the Measures continues with the CDC's Liz York on Measure 7: Design for Wellness:

"When we build anything, we must ask, how does this building sustain health? Is any part of the design harmful to people? Could we make other design choices that improve social, mental, emotional, or physical health?"

I know we have a responsibility, but...this article is interesting in that residential clients seem to value sustainability... last. ....Need to do some edukatin'... and I do, but the great unwashed public needs more.

    David,

I suspect the fact that we make fun of their literacy and refer to them as the "great unwashed public," doesn't help our cause.

This is pure gut reaction but my sense of those who can spend money on an architect are less invested in the permanence of a place and more inclined to think of it as another disposable possession.  Thus whether their project will sustain isn't really on their minds.

Ely's point is well stated but my experience is the opposite.  The patron owner is more often interested in legacy status, sustainability and a curated design palette.
