Who we are

The Committee on Design (COD) was founded to promote design excellence among members of the AIA, the broader design community, and the public at large, both nationally and internationally.

Announcement: 2021 COD Conferences

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the AIA Committee on Design leadership voted to cancel the 2021 Denver conference and postpone the international conference to 2022. Next year's conference dates will be posted once available.

DesignBuildBLUFF is a graduate architecture program at the University of Utah focused on immersing students in hands-on cross-cultural experiences. We work in partnership with the Rural and Native communities of San Juan County in the Utah Four Corners.

At the conclusion of each seminar, there will be a 30-minute discussion with Platinum Sponsor Andersen Windows & Doors about how they are implementing COVID-19 safety, sustainability, and social justice. This discussion does not include AIAU learning units.

    1. Participants will learn about the region's largest social problems, the impact of COVID-19, and how the field of architecture can be part of the solution.
    1. Participants will examine the significance of hands-on learning education to strengthen their own architectural practice.
    1. Participants will explore the concept of sweat equity as a tool for homeowner empowerment and capacity building. The concept of "sweat equity" is one in which the client uses their own labor, rather than cash, as a form of contribution in the building process.
    1. Participants will learn how to build affordable, sustainable, and culturally appropriate housing through a participatory design process, flexible housing prototype, and construction methods.
    1. Larger objective learning unit categories that will be covered: Pre-design, Design, Materials and Methods, Environmental, Sustainability

Primary Speaker:  Hiroko Yamamoto, Instructor, DesignBuildBLUFF, The University of Utah

Student Builders: Angelica Fierro, Alejandra Castillo. Janie Lundgreen, Logan Prete, Perry Martin, Sharon Rivas, and Molly Schmidt
