2023 COD Conferences

Last year, COD held two domestic design conferences investigating The Authenticity of Place.  The first conference was held in New Orleans, LA.  View the short video of the venue tours and download the conference program book.     DesignBuildBLUFF is a graduate architecture program at the University of Utah focused on immersing students in hands-on cross-cultural experiences. We work in partnership with the Rural and Native communities of San Juan County in the Utah Four Corners.  

    At the conclusion of each seminar, there will be a 30-minute discussion with Platinum Sponsor Andersen Windows & Doors about how they are implementing COVID-19 safety, sustainability, and social justice. This discussion does not include AIAU learning units. 

    1. Participants will learn about the region's largest social problems, the impact of COVID-19, and how the field of architecture can be part of the solution.
    1. Participants will examine the significance of hands-on learning education to strengthen their own architectural practice.
    1. Participants will explore the concept of sweat equity as a tool for homeowner empowerment and capacity building. The concept of "sweat equity" is one in which the client uses their own labor, rather than cash, as a form of contribution in the building process.
    1. Participants will learn how to build affordable, sustainable, and culturally appropriate housing through a participatory design process, flexible housing prototype, and construction methods.
    1. Larger objective learning unit categories that will be covered: Pre-design, Design, Materials and Methods, Environmental, Sustainability
