Who we are

The Committee on Architecture for Education (CAE) is a Knowledge Community of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). We are a large and active group of over 10,000 architects and allied professionals concerned with the quality and design of all types of educational, cultural, and recreational facilities that promote lifelong learning in safe, welcoming and equitable environments. The CAE’s mission is to foster innovative and collaborative design of educational facilities and to heighten public awareness on the importance of learning environments.

The Ethical Case for Architects Engagement in K-12 Educational Programs

Our commitment to an ethical code of conduct is one of the differentiating factors of being an AIA member. In this regard, the standards we hold ourselves to uphold in our actions and practice also ought to be the driver for our engagement in producing, leading and participating in K-12 programs in engaging students and teachers in architecture. It is with this challenge , we need to maximize our outreach into our communities. If we want to work with clients who have a greater appreciation for the power and value of architecture, the impact of good design on their daily lives and the potential to inspire future architects, we need to embrace our ethical commitments and use them to fortify our efforts towards building the future we wish to see in our communities. The process begins in school and we need to be a part of the process. So pick a path and follow it.
