During the EDspaces Conference last week I attended a session called the "Etch-a-Sketch" Classroom. The presentation provided justification to a concept I've had since college..."You can't discount the ability to just be able to write on a Wall". Now in this context the wall is a white board or is a typical wall that has been painted with Idea Paint, or other similar product. (I am not encouraging writing on any wall when you feel like it). But this concept of just being able to sketch, or annotate, and be able to fluidly think through a problem using the environment as a means of expressing your ideas, this is something that is a natural instinct.

In your experiences, do you feel that simplistic design solutions such as making a wall writable are being pushed to the side in favor of more advanced technology?

One of the things we try to emphasize about school design is that technology is critical, but not everything.  Hands on experiences are critical for students to be well rounded thinkers and problem solvers.  Sketching, tinkering, creating, etc. are often forgotten, but we see them making a come back...  I noticed at the MIC tour Tuesday that they had a lot of wall surfaces that were marker friendly as well.  I agree that it is a fantastic element, affordable, and creates learning opportunities in new spaces.
