  • 1.  Spatial Requirements for Higher Ed in time of Covid 19?

    Posted 05-11-2020 09:30 AM

    Hopefully, the spatial requirements with Covid 19 will be temporary.
    Yet - in planning for upcoming summer and fall classes there needs to be immediate adjustment.

    With the obvious exception of the 6' bubble - or approx 30 sq ft per person, or scheduling changes;

    Has anyone created any documents to be shared with higher ed campuses on how to adjust spatial distance?

    Welcome your response-

    Just some thoughts. (However, I would love to see documented lessons learned as Sally described in the previous post, for higher ed and elementary/secondary schools.):

    From listening to discussions in the media, the suggestion for possible staggering by grade on different days of the week could be a consideration in K-12 facilities since most schools will not have the gross square footage available for this distancing.  I think it begs for a move toward more flexibility in spaces, with some redundancy by way of multipurpose spaces. Higher Ed certainly faces a bigger challenge with closing and reopening during these waves of infection with campus resident students vs. neighborhood K-12 schools.

    A cautionary lesson learned watching my wife's career as an educator is that committing too much into trendy designs can require renovations later to restore overlooked issues.  For example: acoustics became unbearable in the open plan / pod arrangements in dated elementary schools within one of her districts, which prompted costly interior reconstruction work.

    Good Point Haden D. Smith - hopefully this social distance is NOT permanent - nor a fad -
    but architects could come forth with potential suggestions on temporary solutions to keep spaces open and operational.

    I believe, it is time we stop thinking only in terms of space. The schools and higher ed facilities of the future need to be a real combination of physical and digital. This concept we currently have of certain number of physical contact hours in the school environment will not work.

    Regarding Sally Grans-Korsh's question, the AIA just released the following:

    Although not specific to Higher Ed, there are some useful strategies and measurement criteria.

    The impact of social distancing is significant, but 30 sq.ft./person assumes 6 feet on center.  6 feet apart will require something closer to 45 sq.ft./person.  And that's standing.  Seated, it would even be a bit more.
