The Academy page supports AIA's efforts to connect education and practice. AIA works with faculty, staff and students; practitioners; and collateral organizations to support excellence in education and research, expand the pathway to the profession, and prepare future architects. AIA regularly pools resources with AIAS, ACSA, NCARB, NAAB, and others to provide scholarships, educational programming, research, resources, and more.

    Happy August! Our biggest news for this update is the opening of the Call for Abstracts for our Intersections Symposium at A'20. We are excited about the topic, our co-chairs and being in LA next May -- Submit today!

    The American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) are pleased to continue their partnership dedicated to the INTERSECTION of Education, Research and Practice. A series of educational sessions at the 2020 AIA Conference on Architecture in Los Angeles will feature exemplary research projects that address the Symposium theme of Design for Climate Action

    Grants

    2019 AIA Upjohn Research Initiative Grants – deadline August 29, 2019

    The Upjohn program funds up to six research grants of $15,000-$30,000 per recipient annually for projects completed in a 6- to 18-month period. Research should be relevant and applicable to practicing architects. Upjohn Research grant funding will be allocated to projects related to AIA's priorities for 2019. These include a drive toward design that helps reduce energy use, supports the investment in sustainable buildings, and encourages equitable communities.

    AIA Design for Aging Fellowship

    The Design for Seniors Fellowship is for graduate students and young professionals enrolled in an Architecture Program or aging focused program (nursing, gerontology, health administration, product design, industrial design, landscape, etc.). The fellowship will increase their awareness of the needs and nature of aging in place, attracting talented young architects, designers, professionals and students to the field and advancing the knowledge of planning and design for senior living environments.     Competitions

     2019 Cocktail Napkin Sketch Contest

    Submissions must be postmarked by September 6, 2019.  Details here:  https://www.architecturalrecord.com/articles/14001-enter-the-2019-cocktail-napkin-sketch-contest   Licensed architects or related professionals who practice in the United States are eligible to enter. Two grand prize winners will be chosen (one licensed architect, one related professional). Grand prize winners will receive a $300 gift card and a set of cocktail napkins with their winning sketch printed on it! The sketches of the winners and runners-up will be published in the November 2019 issue of Architectural Record and published online.

     

    JUMP into STEM - Building science competition for students from DOE

    JUMP into STEM is an online building science competition for undergraduate and graduate students at US colleges and universities. The JUMP into STEM initiative seeks to inspire the next generation of building scientists, focusing on creative ideation and diversity in the building science field. JUMP into STEM attracts students from majors such as computer science, data science, statistics, mathematics, physics, economics, sociology, meteorology, architecture, and various engineering disciplines in addition to the traditional building professional degrees of civil and mechanical engineering. 2019-2020 Challenges are now online! https://web.ornl.gov/sci/buildings/jump/   Develop your creative idea for energy efficient building solutions by November 15 and compete for a paid summer 2020 internship at ORNL or NREL. Ideas must be submitted by teams of 2-5 people with at least two different majors.

    3. Pushing the Envelope with Wall Retrofit Designs


    ACSA Hosts Several Student Competitions

    AIA Cote Top Ten for Students

    Registration & submissions are open from June 2019 to January 15, 2020 for AIA Committee on the Environment 2019-2020 Student Design Competition. Details here:  http://www.acsa-arch.org/programs-events/competitions/2020-cote-top-ten-for-students

     

    Apply to Compete in the Solar Decathlon 2020 Design Challenge!

    Interested collegiate institutions can find detailed information on how to apply for the 2020 Design Challenge. 2020 Design Challenge teams that are selected as Finalist Teams will present their projects at an expert-juried event, April 17–19, 2020, at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colorado. www.solardecathlon.gov

    Dept. of Energy Announces Five Small Business Innovation Research Phase II Awards

    American small businesses received a near-$44 million boost from the Energy Department's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Small Business Innovation Research program. Five buildings-focused Phase II Release 2 grants were awarded to five small businesses whose projects have demonstrated a level of commercial feasibility for further innovations in the second phase of their research.
