Who we are

The Academy page supports AIA's efforts to connect education and practice. AIA works with faculty, staff and students; practitioners; and collateral organizations to support excellence in education and research, expand the pathway to the profession, and prepare future architects. AIA regularly pools resources with AIAS, ACSA, NCARB, NAAB, and others to provide scholarships, educational programming, research, resources, and more.

    Greetings!  Happy fall and a listing of opportunities for faculty, students and practice. 

    CALL for HEAT Volunteers!

    If you teach or are an administrator in a NAAB accredited architecture program in the US, and would like to advise, share, and promote the issues, needs, trends, and aspirations of architectural education, students, and educators, we need you!  We are looking for six (6) new volunteer members for the Higher Education Advisory Team (HEAT) to offer advice, expertise, and updates on issues in architecture higher education to the AIA Higher Education staff and other Institute staff as appropriate. The members are selected from the six US ACSA regions and serve two- year calendar year terms (January-December). AIA members are preferred, but not required. Volunteers will be selected from an application process directed by AIA staff and in consultation with current HEAT members. The application process is open and complete information is available here:  HEAT Application & Info.   The deadline to apply is Nov. 1, 2019 with role to begin January 2020 for two years.     Attn Faculty:  Connect with Experts: Register for JUMP into STEM's Webinar Series

    The Department of Energy's (DOE's) online building energy efficiency competition, JUMP into STEM, kicked off a 2019–2020 webinar series with seven dynamic presentations to share the latest in building technologies research from university, industry, and National Laboratory building science innovators from across the U.S. Five webinars remain in the series:

    • Monday, October 7, 1–2 p.m. ET: "Smart Sensors and Controls for Residential Buildings." Hosted by Jim Leverette, Southern Company.
    • Tuesday, October 8, 3–4 p.m. ET: "Designing a Healthier and Energy-Efficient Air Distribution System." Hosted by Grant Wheeler, National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).
    • Wednesday, October 9, 3–4 p.m. ET: "Smart Sensors and Controls for Residential Buildings." Hosted by Michael Kane, Northeastern University. 
    • Monday, October 14, 1–2 p.m. ET: "Designing a Healthier and Energy-Efficient Air Distribution System." Hosted by Jeff Munk, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
    • Tuesday, October 15, 3–4 p.m. ET: "Pushing the Envelope with Wall Retrofit Designs." Hosted by Andre Desjarlais, ORNL.

    Students: Take the Challenge, Score an Internship  - JUMP into STEM

    JUMP into STEM is an online building science competition for undergraduate and graduate students at US colleges and universities. Have a creative, energy efficient buildings solution? Share it by Friday, November 15, 2019, and compete for a paid summer 2020 internship at ORNL or NREL. Ideas must be submitted by teams of two to five people with at least two different majors. Challenges focus on:

    1. Smart sensors and controls for residential buildings
    2. Designing a healthier and energy efficient air distribution system 
    3. Pushing the envelope with all retrofit designs.

    JUMP into STEM is co-led by ORNL and NREL with support from DOE's Building Technologies Office.
