Who we are

The Academy page supports AIA's efforts to connect education and practice. AIA works with faculty, staff and students; practitioners; and collateral organizations to support excellence in education and research, expand the pathway to the profession, and prepare future architects. AIA regularly pools resources with AIAS, ACSA, NCARB, NAAB, and others to provide scholarships, educational programming, research, resources, and more.

  • 1.  Updates and tips - March 2020

    Posted 03-17-2020 11:11 AM
Good morning and hopefully everyone is staying safe in this world of the COVID-19 virus. I have seen some wonderful sharing of tips for working remotely, teaching online, and fun memes too,  So as you shelter-in-place, some items to share, but remember -- WASH YOUR HANDS and KEEP your DISTANCE!

AIA has decided to postpone the AIA Conference in Los Angeles. A re-scheduling or virtual delivery of sessions is under exploration. We will also see how we might present our 2020 Intersections Symposium sessions on climate action, so stay tuned.

The call for abstracts for the AIA / ACSA Intersections Research Conference in Philadelphia has been extended to April 1, so submit your research from academia and/or practice, focused on the theme of Carbon.

ACSA cancelled their annual meeting scheduled for March 12-14, 2020 in San Diego and they are working to move it online. (Sadly, I had to cancel a visit to New School San Diego, too -- hopefully another time!) ACSA is among those offering tips for faculty and staff having to move their teaching completely online as most schools close for several weeks or the rest of the semester. If you teach, hopefully these will help.

The AIA is proud to sponsor the DOE Solar Decathlon Design Challenge and Build Challenge this year. The Design Challenge, scheduled for April 17-19 at NREL in Golden, Colorado, has been moved from F2F to a virtual delivery. Schools will submit their presentations to jurors by video and then do a brief live presentation.  The 48 teams come from 36 institutions from across the US and the world. More details can be found here

Dr. Andrew Ibrahim at the University of Michigan, formerly part of our AIA Design & Health Leadership group announced the launch of the Health and Design Fellowship at the University of Michigan. This two-year, fully funded, fellowship will train architects, urban planners and designers with the most rigorous methods of health analytics to inform how we can create, construct and evaluate better designs to impact health. The fellow will be highly mentored by world-class experts in healthcare, public health, policy, econometrics, architecture, and alongside a cohort of high-impact clinical scholarsThe application is now open and due April 1. Please feel free to share with anyone who shares a similar passion to realize the impact of the design on health!
