Oak Ridge National Laboratory is hosting a student competition for individuals or teams of university students. The prize is an internship at ORNL, but the learning is endless! ORNL has posted two challenges to date related to the issue of residential buildings.

Residential buildings are 95% of the US building stock, use 50% of peak demand energy, and  21% of US energy.
DOE Goal:  By 2025, reduce the energy use for space conditioning and water heating in homes by 40% from 2010 levels. (Dept. of Energy).

Challenge 1: Connecting the RIGHT Data at the Right Time to Improve Residential Building Performance. How can we tackle connecting behavioral motivations with increasingly accessible energy use data?

Challenge 2:  Fault Detection - Designing New Methods for a Fault Detection and Diagnosis in Buildings
