To succeed in public interest design, an architect typically has to be able to get out of his or her comfort zone and get involved in other areas of expertise that do not necessarily correspond with an architect's typical design training.  This might involve fund raising, grant writing, public consensus building, etc.

Do you feel that it is appropriate for architects to expand the breadth of their skill set and become in a wide variety of other activities related to this work?  What are the potential advantages to this approach?  What are some of the pitfalls?

Please let us know what you think about this expanded role for the PID architect, and what impact this might have on education, training, mentorship and even potentially license requirements.
