Influence the next edition of the ICC International Codes

  • 1.  Influence the next edition of the ICC International Codes

    Posted 05-23-2017 12:49 PM

Below is a critical advocacy opportunity for architects to help shape the direction of our nation's model construction codes with a response deadline of June 1, 2017

The International Code Council (ICC) is accepting applications to sit on its 2018/2019 Code Committees during the next code cycle to develop the 2021 editions of the ICC International Codes. These committees will have a significant influence on the content of these codes.

    • Application forms are available here in either Microsoft Word or PDF format (use the links under "Codes and Standards Committees")
    • Applications for the ICC Code Committees are due June 1, 2017. This includes applications for both 2018 Group A and 2019 Group B committees.
    • Those selected to one or more of these ICC Code Committees are authorized to travel at ICC's expense when participating at the Committee Action Hearings in April 2018 and/or April 2019.
    • We particularly encourage any AIA members who are employed by a government entity involved in construction regulation (e.g. code officials, plans examiners, etc.) to submit applications General Interest (G) category.
    • For complete information, including the list of ICC codes that will be considered in either Group A or Group B, visit the ICC Call for <g class="gr_ gr_38 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar multiReplace" id="38" data-gr-id="38">Committees</g> <g class="gr_ gr_32 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling" id="32" data-gr-id="32">webpage</g> and click on the expandable tab marked "2018/2019 Code Committees".
    • If you do decide to apply for one or more ICC code committee, please send us a note at codes@aia.org with a copy of your application.
    • Applications will be reviewed by the ICC Codes and Standards Council who is responsible for making recommendations to the ICC Board of Directors who make the final appointment decision.

There are currently 17 Code Committees, responsible for the review and evaluation of code change proposals submitted to the 2018 ICC International Codes (which will be published in fall 2017). The codes will be grouped into two cycles:

    1. 2018 Group A Code Committees considering code change proposals (submitted before January 2018) at the 2018 Committee Action Hearing during the period of April 15 – 25, 2018 in Columbus, OH.
    2. 2019 Group B Code Committees considering code change proposals (submitted before January 2019) at the 2019 Committee Action Hearing during the period of April 28 – May 8, <g class="gr_ gr_47 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="47" data-gr-id="47">2019</g> in Albuquerque, NM.

Each cycle will start with a public code change submittal period, with code change proposals due in early January of the applicable calendar year. Code Committee members review the applicable code change proposals under their committee's purview, then meet together in April at the Committee Action Hearing to discuss and hear public testimony on each item before voting to recommend its approval or disapproval.
