  • 1.  Applications Due April 10 for ASHRAE Standard 90.1 Technical Committee (SSPC 90.1)

    Posted 04-06-2020 05:07 PM

The standard development committee that maintains and updates ASHRAE Standard 90.1: Energy Standard for Sites and Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings is looking for volunteers to serve on its technical committee. We highly encourage any AIA members and licensed architects to consider applying for this committee as it works to create the next edition of this highly influential standard, ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2022.

Please apply HERE. Applications are due Friday, April 10, 2020.

ASHRAE is considering applicants for this technical committee for a two-year term beginning July 1, 2020. Please note that this is not a call for official primary or alternate organizational representatives for AIA National or any of its components. Any applicants selected as a committee member or consultant would represent themselves and/or their firms.

More information about this Standard 90.1 technical committee and the ASHRAE application process is below. Please reach out if you have any questions.

Standard 90.1 forms the basic technical requirements for most regulatory actions around commercial building energy efficiency. Standard 90.1 is a consensus-based technical standard composed of A/E/C professionals, industry representatives on both the energy generation and equipment manufacturing sectors, governmental (local and federal) regulators, and geographically diverse (see more within ASHRAE's 90.1 Portal).

There are three levels of participation on the Standing Standard Project Committee (SSPC 90.1): Consultant, Sub-Committee Voting member, and Project Committee Voting member.  In line with that, there are three types of recurring meetings. Work groups that may meet as needed to develop proposals. Sub-committees then meet to discuss modify, review, and vote on proposals to be forwarded to the full committee. The Sub-Committee typically meets once every two weeks via conference call for two hours. Finally, the full Project Committee meets four times per year for three days to finalize and vote on proposals. These meetings are usually face-to-face and rotate to different cities around the country (Note: The next two meetings are expected to be held virtually) .

Standard 90.1 affects virtually every building constructed (except single family houses) in North America, and since 90.1 is an international standard, it is referenced in many other countries. Additionally, it is considered the baseline for every green building rating system and utility incentive programs.
