"As industry leaders and stakeholders, architects must participate in the development and application of appropriate regulations and standards intended to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public." – AIA Directory of Public Policies and Position Statements, December 2017

One of the core functions of the AIA Codes Advocacy Program is to participate in the development of construction codes that make the built environment and our communities safe, resilient, and sustainable. Given the widespread use of the I-Codes across the United States, the AIA actively participates in the International Code Council (ICC) model code development process. The results of this triennial effort (the 2021 I-Codes) will greatly influence the building codes adopted in the states and municipalities across the United States where you practice.

Just like a year ago for the Group A code cycle, the AIA is developing code change proposals for Group B in <g class="gr_ gr_71 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="71" data-gr-id="71">calendar</g> year 2019. If you have improvements to the code you would like the AIA to consider co-sponsoring, send your code change proposal(s) to us at codes@aia.org by Thursday, September 27, 2018. We will review these submissions and respond by Thursday, November 15, 2018. AIA members whose proposals are not selected for co-sponsorship by the AIA Codes Advocacy Program are certainly welcome to submit their proposals directly to ICC via cdpACCESS (details below) – on the behalf of yourself, your firm, and/or your state or local AIA component.

Before you submit your code proposal(s) to us for consideration, please review the available information on the 2018/2019 ICC Code Development Cycle (scroll to the bottom), including the full cycle schedule. Please note that Monday, January 7, <g class="gr_ gr_68 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="68" data-gr-id="68">2019</g> is the deadline for submitting code change proposals for the Group B code groups to ICC via cdpACCESS. Those code groups are listed below. Those not listed were included in Group A in early 2018 and will not be up for consideration in <g class="gr_ gr_67 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="67" data-gr-id="67">calendar</g> year 2019).
