Call for papers: 2018 ASTM International Symposium

  • 1.  Call for papers: 2018 ASTM International Symposium

    Posted 09-07-2017 11:35 AM
Papers Invited for October 2018 ASTM International Symposium on Building Science and the Physics of Building Enclosure Performance
    Abstracts due September 29

The symposium is co-sponsored by ASTM International's Committee on Performance of Buildings (E06) and Committee on Roofing and Waterproofing (<g class="gr_ gr_50 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-del replaceWithoutSep" id="50" data-gr-id="50">D08),</g> and will take place in conjunction with the October standards development meetings of Committee E06.
This one-day symposium will provide a forum for the exchange of ideas on current research regarding building science and the physics of building enclosure and whole building performance, with an emphasis on transitions between the horizontal and the vertical and the critical points of intersection; testing and assessment of heat, air, and moisture transfer; energy use, and the environment. The program will begin with an opening keynote and unfold as follows:
    • Building Science Fundamentals
      • Physics of Heat/Air/Moisture Transfer
      • Material Selection for Durability and Performance
      • Interface Detailing and Continuity of Environmental Control Layers
    • Assessment and Understanding of Whole Building Performance
      • Critical Review of Standard Guides, Practices, and the Codes
      • Energy Modeling Facts, <g class="gr_ gr_53 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="53" data-gr-id="53">Myths</g> and Legends
      • Testing and Assessment of Building Enclosure and Whole Building Performance
    • Case Studies in New Construction and Adaptive Reuse (The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly)
      • New Construction: Promises Made/Promises Kept?
      • Adaptive Reuse: A Road Paved with Good Intentions
      • Conservation: A Living Testament to 'Sustainable Design'
    • Plenary Session and Panel Discussion
      • Lessons Learned
      • The Road Ahead
In the spirit of collaboration between D08 and E06, papers co-authored by D08 and E06 members are encouraged but not required.

To participate in the symposium, authors must submit a 250-300 word preliminary abstract no later than September 29, 2017. The abstract must include a clear definition of the objective and approach of the work discussed, pointing out material that is new, and present sufficient details regarding results. The presentation and manuscript must not be of a commercial nature nor can it have been previously published. Because a limited number of abstracts will be accepted, be sure that the abstract is complete to allow for careful assessment of the paper's suitability for this symposium. The Symposium Chairs will notify you via postal mail by November 24, 2017, of your paper's acceptability for presentation at the symposium.

Registration questions can be directed to Tessa Sulkes (see below). For technical information or questions, contact symposium chairman Dan Lemieux (dlemieux@wje.com), or co-chair Jennifer Keegan (jennifer.keegan@intertek.com).
