    TDBP members,

As promised, I am forwarding an awesome opportunity for those of you keen to get involved in energy codes policy work (via code development). I'm pasting below a message targeted at member groups like yours. Check it out and get in touch with me if you want to join the team! And feel free to forward to your colleagues!

    Hello,

Thank you for your interest in being a part of the AIA Code Review Team for the International Code Council (ICC) Group B Code Development Cycle. This effort is vital to the AIA’s impact on the consensus process that will determine the technical content and scope of our nation’s model building codes, which will influence the state and local codes adopted in your community that affect your practice daily. Through the leadership of the AIA Codes and Standards Committee (C&S), we aim to proactively engage with AIA members openly and in pertinent issues as they arise to achieve the Institute’s vision to build and protect communities that promote health, safety and welfare. Your participation here supports the AIA’s position promoting regulations that assure the design and construction of safe, sustainable buildings and resilient communities.

Among the national model codes that will be debated and voted during Group B in the 2016 calendar year are the 2018 editions of the:

    • International Energy Conservation Code (IECC)
    • International Fire Code (IFC)
    • International Building Code (IBC) – structural provisions only
    • International Existing Building Code (IEBC) – structural provisions only
    • International Residential Code (IRC)
    • Administrative provisions of all 2018 ICC codes

In September 2015, the C&S Committee held a webinar for advocates interested in participating in the ICC Group B Code Development Cycle. This provides a great overview and introduction for those new to the process. We encourage you to check it out! The proposals to change these codes will be debated over 11 days (April 17-27) at the ICC Group B Committee Action Hearings (CAH) in Louisville, KY. AIA staff and members of the C&S Committee will attend these hearings to support the AIA’s positions on these code change proposals.

Significant work and collaboration lies ahead. The number of proposals is expected to be very large. Any and all assistance from volunteers from our different membership groups is much needed and appreciated. The realities of the schedule dictate a very short timeframe in which we can conduct this review. ICC will release the entire set of code change proposals (known as a monograph) to the public on March 8, leaving just five weeks until the hearings begin. Our staff has targeted a three-week period (March 21 to April 8) for volunteers to review and submit their feedback on the proposals assigned to them.

We will likely schedule on onboarding call the week of March 14 to go over the process of reviewing individual proposals and making assignments.
