"Architects Leading the Commissioning Process - Convention Workshop", was an in depth look at the commissioning process and some of the industry factors that should have architects paying attention. The more stringent energy codes, industry push toward performance base evaluations, and the growing Cx industry means that we need to educate ourselves and ask what are the opportunities to build better buildings and expand our scope. Maureen Guttman AIA the President of The Building Codes Assistance Project identified the growing number of codes, standards, and sustainable rating systems that require commissioning. Michael Chelednik AIA Sr Airport Terminal Architect, URS and Pamela Sams AIA Technical Director for Gensler presented the Building Commissioning Process following ASHRAE Guideline 0 2005 & supplements and ASHRAE Standard 202 - 2012 and how it is an opportunity for Architects to increase their scope as well as how there is a lot of overlap with the Basic Services identified in AIA Document B101. Dan Lemeiux, AIA Principal at Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates presented the history of and the latest information regarding BECx and ASTM's development of Standards, Guides, and Training Programs for BECx.
There was a lot of lively discussion which highlighted architects confusion regarding commissioning and their role in the process. Further information and clarification will be delved into as TDBP forms a focus group to look into Cx.
