Who we are

The Young Architects Forum (YAF), a program of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the College of Fellows (COF), is organized to address issues of particular importance to recently licensed architects.

FAQ: What is a young architect and what is an emerging professional? Young architects are architects licensed up to ten years of initial licensure, and the name does not have any relationship to age. Emerging professionals are professionals who have completed their academic studies up to the point of licensure or up to 10 years after completion of their academic studies. Although young architects are now defined as distinct from emerging professionals, many components refer to these groups similarly. For example, a local YAF group may include emerging professionals and a local Emerging Professionals Committee may include young architects.

Do you know of any emerging architects who are innovating architectural practice? Are they expanding architectural services? Or combining architecture in interesting ways?

Where is the practice of architecture going next?

Personally I am trying to engage the Architect in single family residential design in a significant way. At the core, the architect leads the process of design with an understanding of construction, and follows through on the built product - I wrote more about it on our blog:

Thank you for sharing your efforts and website! I appreciate your statement "The building is the end product, not the drawings".

On your website, it is very cool how every team member bio includes "&". In small firms, everyone needs to wear different hats. As you bridge design & building, it makes sense that your team members also cross boundaries.

This may stray to the unconventional route but these guys graduated during the recession and could not get a job anywhere. So they started their own business in their garage as a decor and furniture company. As they have grown they have also gown to do small remodels and now own an event venue they remodeled. In their own millennial way, they have defined how they design and what they design without having any architecture licenses. Granted they are not doing new buildings and are not practicing as architects, but there is some substance to leaving architecture completely and doing small scale custom designs exactly the way you want to. I could imagine a variety of small firms based off of this idea where they just focus on a very small part of a building or very particular aesthetic. https://www.graindesigns.com/who-we-are/

Thanks Samantha – it's really interesting to see what the guys at Graindesigns have done! I hope they do steer back into the world of architecture and buildings – I feel the profession has lost too many from the maker-culture - While I believe the home is the ultimate maker project, and there are so many opportunities for architects to build what they draw.

Hi Katie, I believe architecture and experience design will merge soon, if it hasn't already. Many designers I know have gone on to become in user experience designers (UX), design researchers, engagement strategists, and product managers. It's a really exciting time to be creating products at the intersection of digital and physical environments and design the way they blend together, eg. in schools. There are many discussions about how augmented reality and artificial intelligence will shape the way we think, learn, and grow; but we need chime in on the social, ethical, and economic consequences of these new behaviors. Architects must catch up on this conversation and learn from emerging fields in digital design to stay relevant, gain trust, and contribute meaningfully to solving the world's biggest problems in tandem with the tech industry.

    Hi Katie,

I'm a young architect who started my firm, EVIA Studio, particularly to push innovation in practice. We recently won the Charette Venture Group Architecture Business Plan Competition for our multidiscipline, multi-faceted plan that includes integrated design, real estate development, construction research, and proprietary tech to connect homeowners/renters with building performance. We're only about a year old, so still just a seed, but we're an all-women, totally virtual, agile and ambitious practice with rigorous internal and external standards for equity, sustainability, and prosperity. I've got a LOT to say about the future of architectural practice and some big goals. Would love to chat more with others that do, too, and have launched a Practice Leadership Committee in my local chapter (AIA Silicon Valley) to engage people in similar discussions.
