Designing the Future Landscape: Digital Architecture, Design and Engineering Assets Symposium

  • 1.  Designing the Future Landscape: Digital Architecture, Design and Engineering Assets Symposium

Next week, archivists from the Library of Congress, Architect of the Capitol, and the National Gallery of Art are hosting a symposium in Washington D.C. to discuss the topic of preserving digital information created by our industry. It has been recognized that more work is needed to do due diligence to ensure that important assets are captured and maintained for posterity, in much the same way physical assets (drawings, models, photographs, etc.) have been.

In a digital-centric era, what do we do?

Are we talking about storing the BIM? If so it makes sense to do so, yet there may be a lot of outcry about intellectual property with families, that is if you are using Revit or <g class="gr_ gr_39 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="39" data-gr-id="39">ArchiCad</g> and creating or purchasing your own. There could be a lot of time and money lost for individual companies if their BIM is decompiled.

What are the pros and the cons?
