  • 1.  Use alternative eco materials such as CLT or AAC

    Posted 05-27-2021 10:03 AM
    Hi gang,

I have a new client who has requested to use either CLT (cross-laminated timber) or AAC (autoclaved aerated concrete) materials as feasible.  This will be a 2-story addition to a traditionally wood-framed and siding home.  I have never worked with these materials but they are very interesting.  Does anyone have any experience with them that they can share?  I would appreciate any input or good sources for detailing etc?

    The project is in Maryland.

I am working on a new residence here in Charlotte NC. The Only AAC manufacturer left standing in the states is Aercon of Florida. If you are in Maryland there are significant shipping costs. Their website is very informative. YOu can also talk to Monica Arrango who is their architecture Liason.

Thanks for the information.  I will check out Aercon.   This client has used the AAC before in a project in MD so he is aware of the extra costs and lack of availability  He had to find a mason from NJ who was knowledgeable about installing it at the time.

    Appreciate your response!

I have a lot of CLT knowledge as my wife Kristin Slavin is an expert in designing with that system.

This would be a great place to start with info and details for CLT: https://buildingcarbon12.com/

For permits and related documents associated with Carbon12, please search the address "12 NE Fremont St" at https://www.portlandmaps.com/advanced/?action=permits

Let me know if you have any specific questions and I can do my best to help.

    Stephanie:

I recently used CLTs on a residential 2nd floor addition. We used them for both floor structure and new roof structure – supported on exposed beams.

The best resources I found was here: https://www.thinkwood.com/mass-timber/clt
