  • 1.  Company vs. Personal car

    Posted 08-14-2019 02:37 PM
I have a project that is going to require driving for site access and the employee I would like to assign to this project does not have a car.  I've looked into getting a company car, but I don't think it's going to be the right option for us.

Has anyone had to ask an employee to get a car? How did you handle it and did you offer an incentive/bonus?

    Many thanks!

Firms I have worked for have used Rental cars or used ZIP Car which are  billed to the client  as a reimbursable .

I didn't have a car when I lived in San Francisco (long before Uber and Lyft, etc.). I took a cab to weekly site meetings and my office reimbursed the cost. It seems like one of these options would be easier than buying a car. It's wonderful that your employee can get to work without one.

In the past we've had much success with ride share programs but this project will require almost daily site visits and the client does not allow reimbursement.  I fear that I'll have more than paid for a car by the end of the job.

    Worth consideration:
When I worked at a large firm, we were often encouraged to rent a car to get to the project sites that were out of town (around 4 hours drive). Sometimes we had to take the whole team and then renting was also the most practical option. Renting a car is a whole lot cheaper than buying one, especially if you live in a city that you can get by just fine without one.

    Chyanne,

Buy a company car that reflects your firm's values, put your firm name on the side, and write it off as a business expense.
