Who We Are

The mission of the AIA Small Firm Exchange (SFx) is to advance the mutual interests of architects practicing in small firms. The objectives of the AIA SFx are three-fold:

1. Advocate the value of small firms, the national SFx, and local SFx groups, both within the AIA and to the public.

2. Curate and disseminate the most pertinent resources and information, from the AIA & elsewhere, that benefit small firms.

3. Inform the AIA of current issues facing small firms and areas in which current resources/information are lacking.

Approximately 75% of all firms within the AIA are small firms (less than 10 employees), which equates to 14,459 small firms within the organization.

~26.8% = sole practitioners = 5,173

~33.5% = 1-5 employees = 6,459

~14.7% = 5-10 employees = 2,827

For context, small firms share of staff is 16.0% and share of billings is 12.0%

We need to find ways to leverage that size for collaboration and influence, just like the individual large firms do.

seeking firms who are using the COTE Top Ten Toolkit (and are willing to share)

  • 1.  seeking firms who are using the COTE Top Ten Toolkit (and are willing to share)

    Posted 11-02-2019 04:45 PM
    Greetings,
I work with the Committee on the Environment (COTE) and I'm looking to put together a series of newsletter articles that showcase how firms (in all regions, working on all scales of projects) are using the Toolkit. I hope that each month, that will include one small firm and one medium sized firm (and we'll include some large firms, too). To that end:

If you are (or know of) a small firm that has been using the Toolkit (a little bit or a lot) in the recent months, I'd love to hear from you and find out what's working and what's not, and if there are aspects of your story that we could share in a newsletter piece. These will not be long: just brief snapshots, ideally pointing out what's working but also the lessons. So your "commitment" would likely only be a phone chat or two with me, plus review of how I write up your firm's experience (to fact check and such).

Please drop me an email if you are interested. Even if your story's too new to share just yet, I'd love to "put you on the list" for a piece sometime in 2020.

Thank you, in advance, for your time and consideration.

    Warm regards,
    Kira Gould, Allied AIA

Thank you Kira.  The more firms that use the Toolkit and share their experiences, the more we will all benefit.

For an online course about how some firms are using the Toolkit, please visit Design Excellence and Climate Change – Bay Area Case Studies from AIA San Francisco COTE.  The presenters discuss the AIA COTE® Top Ten Toolkit, their firms' integrative design approaches, and how architects can persuade clients to incorporate strategies that achieve both design excellence and exceptional building performance. (Full transparency: This is a paid online course produced in conjunction with AIA San Francisco, who receives a portion of the course revenue to help fund their other programs, and by www.aecknowledge.com, which I own.)  I seldom mention our online courses in these posts due to perceived conflicts of interest; however, the five passionate presenters in this course are quite amazing and this is such a timely topic.  And if your chapter wants to stream this course at an in-place event, the fee will be waived.
