I am looking for recommendations for a good stair design book. I am particularly interested in the design of curved stairs. Any suggestions?

I always start with a visit to Architectural Graphic Standards, and it's old school 'step sister' Timesaver Standards.  These hefty tomes have tons of details ... maybe a page or three in both ... so just a place to start.

There is a great web site that has tons of stair ideas:

    I also recommend the book:

I'm sure there are other books and web sites out there with even more information.

SO frustrating to have my clients continually bring me photos of sexy stairs they like, only for me to tell them the various reasons they do not meet the building code!  And many of the magazines that publish them should know better!

One of my worst nightmares was being confronted with on of these. A product marketed in Europe.

During a large renovation project my owner found a couple of pictures online and went bananas.

Re publications depicting non-code stairs... you can include Architect in that category.  It's amazing that a magazine 'of and for' Architects publishes photos showing obvious violations.   I've made that complaint to the AIA in the past, but have never received any response.  AIA publications should, of all sources, insist that published projects represent the best of our profession... and should decline publicizing those that do not meet that standard.

That has been an issue with me for years.   It's is totally irresponsible and unconscionable of the AIA.

Especially when the magazine/award comes from the AIA! That issue has driven me crazy for years. The AIA should endorse code compliant over sexy or at least have the consistency to argue code!!
