The Practice Management Knowledge Community (PMKC) identifies and develops information on the business of architecture for use by the profession to maintain and improve the quality of the professional and business environment.  The PMKC initiates programs, provides content and serves as a resource to other knowledge communities, and acts as experts on AIA Institute programs and policies that pertain to a wide variety of business practices and trends.

'Managing Uncertainty' Database Opportunity

    Dear colleagues:


    Please ask clients to participate in the new Managing Uncertainty database of actual project experience, documenting common risk factors and their impacts on project cost, schedule, and quality.  This work is sponsored by AIA, the AIA Large Firm Roundtable, Construction Owners Association of America, AGC, and other industry groups.  Preliminary findings indicate that typical projects experience two or more common risk factors but do not carry sufficient budget reserves to cover them.


    We're seeking 100-150 education, healthcare, and office projects for the pilot phase of database development.  Participating owners will receive a worksheet from Dodge Data & Analytics and have a follow-up interview with the Dodge team.  Individual project information will be kept strictly confidential, and will be compiled with other contributions for data searches based on project types, locations, delivery methods, and other parameters.  Contributors will receive a summary report of our findings from the pilot phase.

    This initiative follows original research published in Managing Uncertainty and Expectations in Building Design and Construction (McGraw Hill Construction, 2014) and the Project Planning Guide for Owners and Project Teams published in 2018 by Dodge Data & Analytics.  Both of these documents are available without charge from or the AIA website.

    ​I opened my office in Miami, Florida on November 1971. During those times there were no cellular phones or PCs . A receptionist would take all calls and distribute them according to their reason and importance. Emergency calls would be handled as such.
    Since the advent of cellular phones and PCs, their indiscriminate use during work hours has become a prevalent practice. Employees do not realize that the hours they use for personal reasons are not paid by the Clients. Those hours are the equivalent of stealing material items from the business.
    Plus, the distraction from the concentration necessary for the work, the delay in production and the possibility of introducing errors and omissions create a risk that staff members should not impose upon their employers.
