Special Issue: Designing and Building for Islam

This message has been cross posted to the following Discussion Forums: Committee on Design and Interfaith Forum on Religion, Art, & Architecture .

Islam is the fastest-growing religion in North America. Architects, artists, and liturgical design consultants need to understand the traditions, customs, and emerging patterns of the Muslim faith as it makes its home in the U.S. Faith & Form is preparing a special issue this year that will consider typologies of mosque function, design, decoration, and construction for an audience that will help create Islamic houses of faith in the future. Submit your design projects (built or unbuilt), artwork, or article ideas to the editor at: mcrosbie@faithandform.com by July 1, 2015.

Out in Lanham, Maryland, right in a suburban community there is new complex being completed for the Islamic faith with minaret towers and large mosque right across the street from 1950's Levitt style homes.  The complex is absolutely breath taking.  I sat and watched a few minutes of construction and watched people stop their cars and look.  Mr. Crosbie, you are right.  I never would have thought such a powerful structure would be built right here in suburbia.
