Going Deep
Geo-thermal System Integration at St. Patrick's Cathedral in NYC
Virtual Event
Thursday, July 22, 2021
5:00 PM ET - 6:00 PM ET
Join APTNE for an in-depth discussion about the recently completed HVAC system upgrades at St. Patrick's Cathedral involving everything just beneath the surface! The use of renewable energy sources and the preservation of our most iconic structures are two themes that have been rapidly converging over the last two decades. The Cathedral underwent a comprehensive restoration project that was completed in 2017. One aspect of the project included upgrading all of the steam radiators and the 1960's era mechanical systems to a contemporary system using sustainable energy. A water-to-water geo-exchange system was installed that includes ten wells and a water-source heat recovery chiller connected to new air handlers and fan coil units. The lead architect and mechanical engineers for the design team will discuss the challenges of modernizing the building systems from the installation of standing column wells to the modifications of heating and cooling systems to incorporate geothermal heat pumps all while working within a tight existing footprint in mid-town Manhattan.
