    Dear Colleague:

    The Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS), in coordination with the Greening Youth Foundation, is advertising a Summer 2020 HBCUI (Historically Black Colleges and Universities Internship) Program Summer Architect. 

    The position is a 10-week paid, summer experience, starting in late-May 2020, and will be based in the Heritage Documentation Programs (HABS/HAER/HALS) office in downtown Washington, DC.

    Jocelyn Johnson, HBCUI/HABS Summer 2019 Architect, uses a molding comb to record a door frame. The information will be used to create an existing conditions drawing of the house for the HABS Collection in The Library of Congress. Jocelyn Johnson is a Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Internship Program summer architect from Tuskegee University.


    Qualifications:

    Applicants should have completed at least three years in an accredited program of architecture or pursuing a degree/certificate in Historic Preservation. Coursework in an accredited architecture major or technical/computer-aided drafting is strongly recommended (e.g. Architecture, Architectural History, Computer Aided Design and Drafting, Historic Preservation, etc.). Applicants should possess the following three skills: hand lettering, freehand sketching, and precision computer-aided drafting. Experience in producing field measurements and measured drawing is recommended, but not required. Proficiency with use of AutoCAD or other CAD software is strongly recommended. Work samples will be requested prior to placement (e.g. freehand pencil sketches, architectural lettering, field notes with annotations and measurements, traditional architectural drawings produced in AutoCAD 2016 or later version, etc.).

    Additional Qualifications:

    Must be currently enrolled or recent graduate of an accredited HBCU institution.

    Must be between 16 and 35 years of age.

    Must be U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident or U.S. national.

    Must be able to pass a federal background check.

    Compensation and Benefits:

    Compensation is at a rate of $400 per week.

    Housing stipend or offsite housing is provided for non-local students.

    Attend a "Leadership & Careers Workshop" in August.
