Please join, via webinar, for the next free Department of the Interior Library Park Ranger Speaker Series lecture, entitled "The Washington Monument: A Short History of Past, Present and Future Construction Campaigns" on Tuesday, October 27th from 1:00 - 2:00 pm ET.
Since it first opened to the public in 1888, the Washington Monument has delighted visitors from around the world. On crystal-clear days and from 500 feet above the ground, spectacular views unfold of the National Mall with its vast array of national landmarks, as well as distant views of the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia. Over the years, this iconic monument, dedicated to America's first president, George Washington, has undergone numerous construction campaigns. Keeping the world's tallest unreinforced masonry structure in good repair is no easy task, especially with its soaring height and exposure to the elements. In its long history, it has experienced driving rain, strong winds, lightning strikes and earthquakes, not to mention wear and tear from millions of visitors and more recently, security threats.
Audrey Tepper, the National Mall and Memorial Park's Historical Architect, will offer a brief synopsis of construction campaigns the Washington Monument has experienced over time, with special emphasis on the most recent campaign, the rehabilitation of the elevator and the construction of a new security screening facility.
All that are interested are invited. Please go to the following link to request webinar registration information:
