Peterson, FAIA (1906-2004), a founder of the HABS program, and is intended to heighten awareness about historic buildings in the United States and to augment the HABS/HAER/HALS collection of measured drawings at the Library of Congress.  In addition to generating over 6,800 sheets of drawings for the collection to date, the competition presents awards totaling $10,000 to the winning student teams.

First Place in the 2018 competition was awarded to the student team from the University of Texas at San Antonio, under the direction of Professor Sue Ann Pemberton, FAIA, for their drawings of the Formal Office (1938) at Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin West in Scottsdale, Arizona.  The student team from Ball State University, under the direction of Professor Jonathan Spodek, FAIA, was awarded Second Place for their drawings of Public School No. 1 (1862) in Franklin County, Indiana.  The set of drawings for the Log House (1950) at Briarwood – The Caroline Dormon Nature Preserve in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana, by the student team from Louisiana Tech University, under the direction of Professor Guy Carwile, was awarded Third Place.  An Honorable Mention was presented to the student team from Montana State University, under the direction of Professor Maire O'Neill Conrad, for their drawings of the Log Infill Barn (circa 1895) in Gallatin County, Montana.  A second Honorable Mention was awarded for the set of drawings of Casa Serralles (1911) in Ponce, Puerto Rico, by the student team from the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico, under the direction of Professors Magda Bardina and Roberto Garcia.
