Who we are

The mission of the Historic Resources Committee (HRC) is to identify, understand, and preserve architectural heritage, both nationally and internationally. HRC is engaged in promoting the role of the historic architect within the profession through the development of information and knowledge among members, allied professional organizations, and the public.

    Architectural Plastics & Polymer Composites in the 21st Century: Design & Preservation of Contemporary & Historic Architecture, an intensive 2-day conference organized by Technology & Conservation, the Boston Society of Architects/AIA's Historic Resources Committee, and Prof. Mark Goulthorpe, MIT Dept. of Architecture, will be held on March 28-March 29, 2020 at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts. An optional tour program will be available on March 30.
    TOPICS: In-depth information will be provided on: • currently used plastics/polymer composites for buildings, bridges, and other architectural structure applications • potential of carbon-polymer composites • energy aspects including the role of windows, skylights, and translucent building components • fire resistance behavior • health and safety implications • durability, life cycle and sustainability • new fabrication methods • performance and evaluation • meeting historic regulations and modern standards • conservation/restoration procedures • innovative case studies of structures incorporating plastics (such as stadiums, religious buildings, cultural and dreational facilities, educational and government buildings, bridges, transportation centers, commercial and residential complexes. Conference attendees will be able to gain valuable insights into the performance and sustainability of plastics and polymer composites in specific environments, as well as the appropriate selection, specification, use, and maintenance of these materials for existing and new buildings, other structures, building components, and artistic works. Continuing education credits will be available.
    SPEAKERS: Presentations will be given by more than 25 noted architects, engineers, conservators, polymeric materials specialists, and other professionals involved with the built environment.
