Virtual Lecture - DC Engineers: Thomas Lincoln Casey Sr. and Bernard Richardson Green
    Tuesday, April 21, 2020
    6:30 PM - 7:45 PM
    GoogleMeet
Thomas Lincoln Casey Sr. and Bernard Richardson Green were two of the most influential engineers in Washington, DC. They were responsible for the completion of the Washington Monument, the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, and the Library of Congress. Bernard Green continued his legacy by building the Carnegie Library and the National Museum of Natural History.
This virtual lecture will focus on the construction history of these buildings; how the distinctions between architect, engineer, and contractor were blurred on these projects; and the various innovations that Casey and Green were responsible for implementing in these buildings, like the installation of elevators, Guastavino arches, and efficient metal library stacks. Finally, the enduring importance of these buildings to the architectural, urban, political, and social history of Washington DC and the United States will be highlighted throughout the presentation.
This virtual lecture is presented by Constance Lai, FAIA. Lai is the Manager of Historic Preservation Services for Grunley Construction Company, Inc. and APT DC's own Board Member at Large.
