  • 1.  Percent for the Environment?

One percent of state project construction costs are routinely spent on public art projects in 28 states (see State Percent for Art Program). Why don't we advocate for Percent for the Environment programs? A wise state employee shared this great idea with me after years of watching  sustainable design "extras" get eliminated during the design phase owing to budget limitations.

Many community, state as well as federally funded projects require some level of certification for compliance with established guidelines for environmental sustainability.
Can we work to push for laws for across the board compliance with environmental sustainability standards for all new work in public as well as private work?

The City of Albuquerque has, for a number of years, had a program that directs 3% of its' capital budget for energy conservation. There is an expert advisory committee that works with the city to suggest expenditures in areas such as lighting, solar energy ( both PV and solar thermal), energy conserving retrofits, electric vehicle charging stations, etc. The emphasis is, of course, on cost effective benefits for the citizens. I was a member of the Albuquerque Energy Council from 2006-2012 and found it to be a program that both reduces energy use and saves significant money over the long term for the City.
