Over my objections the Silicon Valley AIA, aka Santa Clara Valley AIA, scrapped an award category for Sustainable Design several years ago., the thinking being that every building project deserving of an award would be sustainable. My argument was even if that was true ( and i'm not convinced it is) sustainability, especially uniquely creative sustainability approaches, need to be recognized and supported. Just giving out design awards does not do that.
My last project before riding off into the sunset a couple of years ago was a large mid-rise spec office complex with a glass curtainwall skin. It was going to get a LEED Platinum classification because the mechanical system hit all the right notes. That's just wrong in my book.
