CAE Higher Ed Subcommittee - Presentation on the New Sandy Hook School , Newtown, CT

  • 1.  CAE Higher Ed Subcommittee - Presentation on the New Sandy Hook School , Newtown, CT

    Posted 11-23-2016 09:17 AM

Presentation by Svigals and Partners -Architect’s/Planners for the New Sandy School

In our next call, we will journey a bit outside of Higher Ed to hear from Svigals on some very difficult planning issues that they have encountered in their progress. This comes as an extension of our last conversation in which the concept of openness and transparency led to an exploration of safety and security.

Here is the abstract from Svigals:

As environments for learning and for collective activities of all kinds, schools provide an essential resource for communities. To build a school that emerges from a specific context and spirit, the project team must engage the community directly, tapping into the most vital resource for designing meaningful architecture: the creative potential of the community. This challenge is especially fraught following violent trauma, as obstacles to constructive engagement arise such as suspicion and dread. This session draws upon Svigals + Partners’ experience designing the new Sandy Hook School. Speakers will elaborate on their method for engaging others in attentive listening. This is crucial to making meaningful architecture, and can also serve to help a community reconnect with themselves, and continue to heal.
