2014 Committee on Architecture for Education Design Excellence Award Category: Merit Description: PAVE Academy is a 450-seat K-8 public charter school located on an isolated corner lot in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn. The design of the school was informed by the PAVE leadership team whose goals included creating a community friendly school that would support significant parent involvement – essential to student success – and the needs of a particularly high-needs population living in poverty. Children arrive early for a quiet breakfast and stay well into the afternoon with learning and play to fill a void many face at home. Jury Comments: This is an uplifting school given the tight constraints of charter schools. Creating interactive spaces in such a tight environment is challenging and the economical plan nevertheless makes great strides. The clearly organized plan makes the most of every inch of the tight urban site, including two small but well- designed outdoor spaces along the street and between buildings. Simple cost effective moves in the use of cladding, fenestration, color and transparency create a memorable school to provide a bright moment in an inner city community. The elegant graphics are used strategically to reinforce and communicate the mission to the student population and community. This school treats students with dignity.
