By my count there are at least 13 major U.S. coastal cities that should be planning for the construction of storm surge protection systems and large flood retention areas. The scope for the above should a part of any Federal Infrastructure legislation.

I prefer buying baloney at the butchery.

    Mr. Middleton,

New Bedford harbor has a storm surge gate they swear by.

Sometimes unusual ideas work.  Sometimes they are better for you than baloney.

Agreed that many buildings now planned for the coast could be built inland.

We must nonetheless contend with protecting existing properties, lives--and national heritage--that exist in coastal zones.

Much of this cannot be replaced at any cost.

Having just seen a presentation by John Englander, I would recommend that you read his book - High Tide on Main Street: Rising Sea Level and the Coming Coastal Crisis - to more fully grasp the impact on our built environment. It is not only storm surges, but increasingly severe storms and rainfall often far from the literal coast, dramatic flooding, king tides and outward surging bays and waterways that threaten our simplistic view of the coast as a static bucolic place in the sun.

On the other hand, perhaps we need to quit building all these big expensive buildings right on the coast.  Just another perspective.

Totally agree with you Brad - - - we need to build smart - not follow old patterns that are unsustainable.
Just because we can does not mean we should

The cost for this infrastructure could built many more structures and much better elsewhere.
