I believe there is a need for existing building assessments and frameworks / guidelines for doing them. Topics range across existing building documentation, life safety, energy compliance, operational best practices, historic preservation, and disaster recovery to name a few. All of these form foundations for architectural expertise / services which engage owners / clients with professionals like ourselves.

Does anyone else have thoughts or suggestions about pursuing this topic further?

    Mark,

There is a robust due diligence industry in place now doing exactly that...check out EMG, bureau Veritas, AEI, Nova Consulting, CBRE, just to name a very very few in this sector. Truth in advertising, I'm the architect that brings these companies onboard the equally robust technical report-writing platform to perform this work, Quire (www.openquire.com).

It's an exciting sector of architecture and building investigation to be working in.

The discipline you are describing is "forensic architecture."

    Mark,
Loraine is correct about the existing building assessments work that are regularly being done.  I regularly provide my services in assessing conditions of building envelope façade and roof systems.  I have provided such services for Partner and Terracon.

I work for the National Park Service and we do assessments on existing buildings every year. In most cases these assessments are very detailed and can involve hundreds of buildings and structures at a time. Our Commercial Services Program uses the data to determine operating and maintenance costs for properties we assign to concessioners to manage for the Service. The topics include deferred maintenance, component renewal, life safety, historic preservation, preventative maintenance, recurring maintenance, etc... This is an area that we have a hard time finding architects who have the required background and experience to provide the services we need which never ceases to surprises me. I agree with your comment!

Up here at the upper-left corner of the continental USA map, the State Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction has a building condition survey/assessment process.  There are criteria for grading various elements of school buildings from excellent (new) to poor.  Rankings for those are aggregated for an overall numerical rating.

OSPI offers training for architects and engineers who would be interested in providing the service.

I'd say that the ratings are useful for overview purposes; once a decision is made to do work on a structure, more investigation is needed.

ASTM and HUD have standard guidelines, i.e.
    PNA, CNA, GPNA, etc.

Trends in Campus Security appears to be a topic brought to the forefront regarding all the recent images in the news.  Advances in technology, education and training of staff, facility design are all topics which I believe would be of interest to our membership.
