Peyton Hall has practiced architecture and planning since 1974, and in California since 1980. He earned a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Virginia and a Master of Environmental Design in Urban Development Analysis with a thesis in historic preservation from Yale University. He holds a certificate from the Center for Palladian Studies in Vicenza, Italy, and was a Fellow at the National Cultural Properties Institute in Tokyo, under an international program administered by the National Endowment for the Arts. Academic recognition includes the AIA School Medal at the University of Virginia and the Parsons Medal in City Planning at Yale.
He has made presentations at the annual conferences of the Society of Architectural Historians, Association for Preservation Technology International, National Trust for Historic Preservation, American Institute of Architects, Western Association for Art Conservation, League of Historic American Theatres, California Preservation Foundation, and the National Trust’s Main Street Program. Hall’s historic preservation projects have received awards from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the California Preservation Foundation, the Cultural Heritage Commission of the City of Los Angeles, and the Los Angeles Conservancy.
Completed and active projects include the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum; the Rose Bowl, Angels Flight Funicular Railway; the Gamble House Conservation Project, Sacramento Memorial Auditorium, eight structures in Old Pasadena, CA; Pasadena City Hall, twelve buildings in El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historic Monument; the Los Angeles County Hall of Justice; the Shrine Auditorium; Grauman’s Egyptian Theatre; Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, the Fox Riverside Theatre, Fox Studio in Century City; Hotel Casa del Mar in Santa Monica; the Town House and Bryson Apartments, Los Angeles; Howard Hughes Industrial District at Playa Vista, the Doheny Mansion, the Ennis House, the Barnsdall House, the Adamson House at Malibu Lagoon State Park, the Harada House, a National Historic Landmark in Riverside, California, historic structure report for Doris Duke’s “Shangri-La” in Honolulu, Greystone in Beverly Hills, the Wallis Annenberg Community Beach House at the Marion Davies Estate in Santa Monica, rehabilitation of the main house Sunnylands, Ambassador Walter and Mrs. Leonore Annenberg’s Rancho Mirage estate, and the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills.
Hall is past President of the Board of Trustees of the California Preservation Foundation, past Chairman of the Board of Directors of Pasadena Heritage, and past member of the Board of Directors of the Western Chapter of the Association for Preservation Technology International. He is a past Chair of the five national Advisors to the Historic Resources Committee of the American Institute of Architects. He is currently a member of the Dean's Advisory Board at the School of Architecture of the University of Virginia.
He is a contributing author to Design and Historic Preservation: The Challenge of Compatibility, published in 2009 by the University of Delaware Press.
