New York Times Page

    A thought:

Could architects join together to pay for a full-page Sunday New York Times page that states that "Black Lives Matter"?

The page would list all people in our profession that agree to have their names printed and who believe in this statement.

This is a moral issue not a political issue for our profession to articulate where we stand.

It would not be the first time a New York Times page as was done during the Vietnam War with a long list of architects who opposed the war.

    Comments?

If there is interest, I can find out costs and dates for page.

    Peace/Thanks

It may have to be a half-page or quarter-page ad given the cost.
    $75,000 divided by 100 = $750 each.
I would guess a $100 contribution might be typical?

    Good comment Doug,

But. Let’s see. Perhaps more than 100 architects or firms will contribute. And, who knows, maybe more than a hundred dollars.

    Long overdue.

Your point is also a good one, Nick.
I hadn’t thought about large contributions by firms, especially large one.
(Perhaps the firm’s name would be in bold.)

A good idea, might be easier to do if firms could sign on as well as individuals.

It is time for the AIA to become more diverse, enroll and mentor more Black architects, understand the destruction of lives that racism in the U.S. has caused, and so much more.  I recently donated $1,000 to the NAACP legal fund and would be happy to donate more as part of an AIA initiative to promote racial equity and social justice and bring more Blacks into the architectural profession.  It's not clear that sending $1,000 or $100 to the NYTimes for an ad helps the Black Community and I'm not sure that it helps the AIA.  I read the NYTimes on line and never see the ads.  I suspect that many others don't see the ads either.  Also, if you haven't already, I highly recommend watching the free Netflix movie, "13th."  It is an eye-opener.

    Helen Kessler is completely correct.

Spend this money on local NAACP or other appropriate BLM groups as opposed to this self-grandizing ad that glorifies architects egos.
