Today, June 12th, we can celebrate the birthday of architect Georgia Louise Harris Brown. She was the second African American woman to become a licensed architect in the United States. Initially studying under Mies van der Rohe at what would become IIT, she transferred to the University of Kansas where she received her architecture degree. After 10 years practicing, she moved to Brazil because in the United States "opportunities for advancement were limited by her race" and undoubtedly by her gender as well. Join me today in making a generous donation to the Architects Foundation Diversity Advancement Scholarship Fund as a memorial to Georgia Louise Harris Brown. Here is the donation link.
