Since we are members of the College of Fellows that are expected to advance the profession, perhaps a better long term goal would be to promote historic property safety. There are two documents that immediately come to mind that could be used for an awareness campaign, the National Fire Protection Association's; 1) NFPA 241 "Standard for Safeguarding Construction, Alternation, and Demolition Operations"; and 2) NFPA 914 "Code for the Protection of Historic Structures". These, along with other references, such as, the Whole Building Design Guide, The Secretary of the Interior's Standards, etc. as part of an awareness campaign would most likely improve the future results of the alteration, rehabilitation, repair, restoration, change of occupancy and addition(s) to historic properties.
