Executive Order for Classical Architecture

It is a good thing for us to communicate with one another over this outrageous mandate from the White House. I agree with Guy Geier that the College of Fellows as a collective group should do something more. But individually each of us, every member of the College of Fellows could and should contact their Congressmen and Senators over this issue. I plan to contact my representatives as well as my local chapter of the AIA and Texas Society of Architects to voice my concern. The more of us they hear from the more impact we will make.

    Greetings All
If you get a chance, please read Michael Kimmelman 's succinct article in today's NYT about what the Trump administration is trying to impose on architects creative abilities. As Fellows and as AIA members, we must present a strong united voice against this administrative farce and reinforce that" design quality "matters .We must also oppose any type of stylistic demands and stand on the principle that "design must flow from from the architectural profession to the goverment, not the other way around,"as Mr Kimmelman quotes Daniel Patrick Moynihan the drafter of the "Guiding Principles of Federal Architecture. Lets move on this quickly.

Now that we have an Administration that openly and nearly unchallenged defies the Law and Constitution of our Country, it should be no surprise that it also tries to impose design standards for its public demonstration of buildings, just like Hitler and Stalin did before.

This is a serious challenge to our professional integrity, intelligence and education. Shall we be relegated to the Albert Speer's of our Rulers?

Guy is right for calling the formulaic response of the AIA to this problem inadequate. The response will not be noticed beyond the "Club" which means it has no public awareness. We need to organize and find a public voice to express our concern and outrage over these proposed changes.

While the references to Hitler and Stalin and their ideas about architecture are spot on there is an even more recent example of the way dictators are drawn to bad interpretations of "Classical" architecture. A Google search of the architecture created in Bucharest Romania by the dictator Nicolae Ceausescu in the 1980's provides a chilling vision of what our government might be thinking. Truly bad and frightening all at once. Unfortunately, there are other equally awful examples, all created under authoritarian regimes.

I agree with all the comments posted here objecting to this new standard of requiring a set style for Federal buildings, and would be more than willing to add my name to any letter or petition.

    Thanks much!
