Lourdes Solera (thank you) suggested setting up a scholarship fund to promote diversity in our profession in lieu of spending money on a New York Times Ad and further asked how to get it started. The structure is already in place to make a meaningful difference with your dollars.  The Architects Foundation has a dedicated Diversity Advancement Scholarship fund that provides financial support to students to further diversity in our profession.  A meaningful donation to that fund is the best way for Fellows to leverage your dollars to support diversity in our profession.  The link to donate is:  https://architectsfoundation.org/donation/  Fellows – please flood them with generous (repeat, generous) donations!

Some of you may recall then-AIA president Tom Vonier's interview with Michelle Obama during her talk at the 2017 Conference on Architecture.  She said, "You can't be an architect if you don't know that they even exist."  I took that to mean that the traditional tracks into our profession have (unintentionally) bypassed various American subcultures, and we get what we've got.  Perhaps such an investment, such as Lourdes suggests, could be actively directed much earlier - at elementary education through an awareness campaign leading to full-on college recruitment in high schools.  Active cultivation, although a longer road, may prove to be deeper and richer 20 years from now.

As a juror for this year's scholarships, I can unequivocally say that the diversity and quality of the students is outstanding.  I would highly recommend donating to the Foundation to maintain its highly effective program.
