Our future depends upon good leadership and architects have the qualities to be good leaders. Architects can provide the leadership the future of our profession, practice and community requires.

With a focus on leadership development, the American Institute of Architects Center for Civic Leadership was tasked to produce a personal leadership tool to enable architects to cultivate their leadership potential. The Center’s effort resulted in the publication of the “Living Your Life as a Leader, Creating Your Personal Leadership Plan”. A strategic tool to promote leadership capabilities and build capacity in the profession is essential. The “Living Your Life as a Leader, Creating Your Personal Leadership Plan” is that tool.
The book is focused on:
- Defining leadership;
- Identifying the process of pursuing and building skills;
- Providing illustrative stories of architect leaders; and
- Facilitating the creating of a personal leadership plan.
The “Living Your Life as a Leader, Creating Your Personal Leadership Plan” was introduced as the foundation for the 2015 Leadership Institute held October 23, 2015. In addition, it is being used as a resource in the Kent State University College of Architecture and Environmental Design Master’s Degree course on Leadership, Ethics and Practice Management. This publication is an essential manual for inspiring and guiding architects on their journey to becoming the leaders our practices, profession and communities so desperately need.
