Sharing and living with BIM thoughts.

I got the opportunity to work with a huge variety of talented people from different backgrounds, with different vision requirements, and experience at CS. However, at the end of my first day, as I get highly inspired by the work culture at CS. It is the platform I was looking for where time and effort get recognized. With the beginning of the year it was only Revit and truly BIM behind me, I spent my week visiting web sites related to BIM Education, clients and potential clients of my company and as on days ran (Continuing Professional Development) sessions for a myself as an BIM user within The bunch of people in the company are very complimentary and the future I was looking to move further. Thoughts what I lived and a sudden switch to new professional circle …Before embarking on this path, i clarify my motives and the level of commitment that is present within my circle. I learned from Mr. R Sharma, particularly at the senior management level his management quality to achieve excellence means managing an organization, business or unit so that every job, every process, is carried out right, first time, every time. To be successful this must be viewed as a holistic approach that affects, and involves, everyone – employees, customers, suppliers, shareholders and society. It must be driven from within the organization, as it cannot be imposed from outside and is not simply a cost-cutting or productivity improvement exercise.

I always find it interesting how BIM (Building Information Modeling) is often seen as something like magical tool and totally revolutionary, whereas for some, particularly my team the user of BIM represents a formalization of what they have been doing to a greater or lesser degree for a number of years. However, with the focus on BIM and Mr. R. Sharma (BIM manager} directive to various projects gave me mandating BIM capability by end of year 2012, for some firms, BIM is happening now, mandated by lead contractors on large projects; others are moving towards BIM, understanding the benefits that implementation can bring; whilst for many others even 2013 will not see them embrace BIM workflows. The good news for my co employees is that they can happily live in any or all of these offices and move between them as their work requirements demand, or even on a project by project basis.

According to team's point of views Building Information Modeling (BIM) is an approach and a path towards the entire life cycle of a buildings. Autodesk Revit Architecture, MEP, and Structure are much powerful programs to support the ability to coordinate, update, and share design data with team members throughout the design, construction, and management phases of a building’s life. A key component in managing the BIM process is to establish a company foundation for different types of projects by creating standard templates and custom elements. Having this in place makes the process of any new project flow smoothly and efficiently. BIM or Building Information with it’s real time three dimensional features, serve as a construction productivity tool to increase productivity in the design and construction phases. Many large construction companies are experimenting with BIM to produce cost and schedule savings.

  • BIM in Construction Industry

  • BIM for Erection

  • BIM for Fabrication

  • BIM Service for Contractor

  • BIM for Infrastructure modeling

BIM can easily explore & examine all the structural design alternatives with flexible interdisciplinary coordination. The structural engineers can easily accommodate with a late change and reduce the disruption of frequent or late changes in the project. Building information model provides the functional relationships among building elements and systems that range from walls, beams, ducts, pipes, distribution panels etc.

By applying BIM in their project structural professionals can coordinate design intent, structural performance and execution and build high performance building. BIM with it’s parametric change management eliminates errors and at the same time automate the communication of changes between the partners in the AEC process. A change occurred to any parameter or element in the design is immediately replicated in every representation of that element in the design along with the right technology, bi-lateral links with obtainable specialized tools for analysis. Any other parameters that are linked to the change are also changed suitably. This result in improving quality as not engineers can rely on the results as well as design team partners also count on the information supplied to them to be the best.

Performance of BIM is different than CAD?  I have seen many peoples who initially see the concept of BIM, they just ignore it off as nothing more than a different version of CAD software. i always let them to understand ? BIM is to CAD is what CAD was to hand drafting. Because both BIM and CAD are computer based the difference on first glance is not easily recognizable. In using CAD, we are essentially drawing the same way we did on paper  by using dimensions towards X-direction and Y-direction. The only difference is that now the drawings are data based and easier to manipulate and revised. Major difference can be optimized, when a designer will move entire walls with a few clicks of the mouse, where as on paper the entire sheet had to be redrawn. This drastically speeds up the process but also creates some challenges as well.

With BIM, the design team does not draw in 2D and we do not need to draw traditional floor plans, sections, elevations.  Instead, you create a full 3D model of your entire building, complete with walls, floors, doors, concrete, steel, etc exactly how you want it to be built in the real world.  Then you tell the computer what drawings you want to generated from this central Building Information Model. If you want a section, simply draw a section line and the program will understand that you want a section cut at that point.  The beauty of this is that when you move walls or change floor to floor dimensions that particular aspect of the building model is automatically updated.  If your client wants to know updated square footage totals, you don’t need to add up anything manually – this information is built into the model and is simple to extract.  Instead of the contractor estimating how much concrete the building contains you can tell him how much.

It is like a theory of building information all construction Technics should be very clear to the user. There are few different ways to implement BIM into our current practices.  Many of BIM Friends in different companies have begun to do so with the help of various methods and levels of success. This would involve people from a consulting company coming in and giving us presentations on how to use the software.  In addition, we would have people go through exercises on their own computers. Because of the nature of BIM, with the multitude of options it provides, this is not the best solution.  It is simply too much to take in a few training sessions.

  • Instant identification of design coordination issues?

  • Facilitates comprehension and communication of the designer’s vision?

  • Expedited decision for problem solving?

  • Coordination and support of Design team?

  • Revenue and time savings and quality of construction documents are improved and problems eliminated Expedited?

  • Risk mitigation through early clash detection?

  • Fast providing program and reduction of RFI’s and QC?

  • Change orders and Reduction is much important?

  • Reduction of stored and waste material

Using Advantages of BIM Services? The deployment of the BIM-Birds modeling team will result in significant budget savings during the design and construction part of the project. In addition, the construction methods, site logistics and program will be more handy, efficient and closely monitored, resulting in less waste with benefit to the entire project. BIM Birds are in the forefront of BIM modeling technology and implementation. BIM Birds includes the following components:

  • Architectural:  High-end 3D Architectural Models.

  • Structural Revit and Tekla modeling for use in the design phases and for fabrication/construction.

  • MEP: Revit Modeling of HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical & Fire Protection systems.

  • Navisworks models for combined clash detection.

  • 4D and 5D modeling for material quantities, cost tracking and scheduling.

“The value of BIM lies in the support of efficient life-cycle facility management process supported by common terms and digital technology. The 3D visualization aspect of BIM is little more than an unfortunate distraction.”

The reputation of any organization is it public, private, small or large is built on the quality and excellence of the products and/or services it provides. Quality management is a very powerful, competitive weapon that any business wishing to be, or stay, successful cannot afford to ignore. Reputations for poor quality last a very long time, ignore it at your peril! Never-ending improvement is the process by which greater customer satisfaction and, if appropriate, greater market share are achieved.

For the construction industry, the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) is moving from scribes carefully hand drafting documents to specialists with computers designing virtual worlds. On BIM day the group of 3 BIM Birds was address the topic, "Using of BIM processes? all birds considers BIM an incredibly exciting development they work for.

Mr. R.S said the BIM’s ability is to produce 3-D images of structures. He also added “BIM is revolutionizing what we do. It allows us to build a virtual building with everything modeled, the street access, and architecture, mechanical.” BIM is the generic term for various software programs that allow users to create perfectly accurate models of buildings. It’s been around in one version or another for quite some time and is used around the world, BIM Birds (my team) use Autodesk’s program Revit, a program that costs about… $? And can be used on most desktop computers.  Before BIM shook the design world, CAD (computer assisted drafting) was used.  Introduced in the early 2004, Big- BIM wasn't affordable for a lot of businesses and huge computational power was required. When powerful desktop computers debuted, software like BIM was developed for use on standalone machines.  Now, there’s no limit to the size of building, which can be created using BIM, just as long as the computer has the necessary processing power,

The user works with a mouse on the screen instead of hand-drafting the structure on paper. Team was enthused about BIM, that untold amounts of information can be embedded in BIM creations. Not only does one draw the wall, they outline what the wall is made of and all other related inputs and details.  As the building progresses, more and more elements are incorporated into the design. The beauty is that if you want to know, for example, the surface area of material used, BIM can also provide the answers based on the inputted detail. “But, to embed data requires a new mindset,” said Mr. R. Sharma, who also use the BIM practice with team. “It requires more thought and explanation at the front end.” The intense amount of work required at the start has led to reluctance to use BIM among some. But the cost-effective benefit of BIM can’t be overlooked. With the ability to have a 3-D representation of a structure, conflicts between mechanical elements for example, are apparent sooner rather than later when fixes can be “BIM helps identify problems that may have been overlooked,” Ramesh said of what’s referred to as clash analysis. “Instead of pages and pages of red ink, you can pull it up on the screen.”  Once the structure has been built, BIM remains relevant, becoming a phenomenal maintenance to renovations, he added.  When changes are planned, they get drawn in.  The challenge is developing a protocol to keep everything current.  At BIM Bird's nest, a smart software developer that specializes in online mapping and GIS/spatial consulting, lead birds, a GIS expert, has been working with BIM for the last seven years.

One of the BIM Bird will answer questions about how he uses GIS to give BIM models real-world locations. He inserts BIM-designed buildings into their actual settings which allow viewers to see exactly what surrounds the new structures.  “BIM is the only way to get a good representation of a building,” he said.  As with other trailblazing products, when it comes to using BIM there have been pioneers, early adopters such as “Arjun, mainstream users and laggards. “It’s the typical Bell curve,” he said, noting that mechanical engineers have been slow to embrace BIM. ‘Why would you do it any other way?’ It gives a lot more information,” he said.
