Welcome to Spring 2018
It is my pleasure to serve as the chair of CRAN for 2018. For the past 3 months our Executive Committee and Advisory Group have been busy organizing various activities for 2018. Please go to our homepage to stay up to date with our events and other news.
Our Yearly Symposium
As most of you are aware our 2017 Symposium in Miami was canceled due to Hurricane Irma. This was a setback for CRAN. Not only did we miss our yearly opportunity to network with our members and our loyal sponsors, we also did not benefit from the important continuing education sessions and tours.
I am happy to report that for our 2018 Symposium which will take place in Cincinnati this October 6-9, a number of our planned Miami speakers will be presenting, along with a new group of speakers and panelists. We have also organized a day of great home tours.
AIA Conference on Architecture 2018
This year the AIA premier event comes to NYC. If you are planning on attending, make sure you register for our CRAN Forum on Thursday, June 21 at 1:30pm, session ME 202. Besides catching up on CRAN business we will be introducing Residential Architect Peer Networks. The conference schedule has more on this innovative networking concept. Additionally CRAN has compiled a track to help the residential practitioner navigate and select appropriate continuing educational sessions and tours. Also, stay tuned for more information of networking social events we are planning with our Brooklyn Chapter, Small Project Practitioner KC (SPP), and Small Firm Exchange (SFx).
The Raymond Farm Center
In the fall of 2017 CRAN sponsored a program “After Wright” which took place at the Raymond Farm Center for Living Arts and Design in New Hope, PA, the former home of the significant 20th century architects Antonin and Noemi Raymond. The program was a great success and was followed with an article published in Residential Design Magazine. This June CRAN will again sponsor a program at the Center: “Details, Details, residential architecture assembled/ the prose & poetry of construction”. 2018 -2019 Student Competition
In 2016-17, AIA and The Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) sponsored a student competition, HERE+NOW: A House for the 21st Century. There were over 560 student and faculty participants and received nearly 200 submissions, with the jury selecting first, second, third and four honorable mention awards. Visit ACSA's site to learn more about this programs and see last-years winners. This year CRAN is again collaborating with ACSA to plan for the 2018-19 competition. More information on this will be posted in the near future.
Our Legacy
In 2016 CRAN formed a Legacy Committee whose mission is to raise visibility among the institutes leadership, membership and the public. The committee is comprised of former CRAN chairs. In 2017 the executive committee by recommendation of the Legacy Committee, approved funding for a yearly scholarship which goes to a high school graduate student registered to attend an NAAB accredited architectural program. This funding is processed through the AIA Foundation. The Foundation’s goal is to advance tomorrow’s design leaders through their Diversity Advancement Scholarship program. This is one of the ways CRAN is helping to advance the future of our emerging professionals.
Our Team
I would like to acknowledge the people who contribute much to the success of CRAN. Their volunteer time, ideas, and talent should be recognized. I would also like to thank John Isch, AIA, Dale Mulfinger, FAIA , and Jeremiah Eck, FAIA for their great efforts in the planning of our next Symposium. And of course the great work of our KC support staff, Susan Parrish, Akanksha Singh, Bruce Bland and Lori Feinman.
Finally I would like to congratulate two members of our CRAN family who have been elevated to Fellow: Former CRAN chair Dawn Zuber, FAIA and CRAN member Leonard Kady, FAIA.
AIA Fellows are recognized with the AIA’s highest membership honor for their exceptional work and contributions to architecture and society. The prestige of FAIA after your name is unparalleled. Members of the College of Fellows have made significant contributions to the profession and society and exemplify architectural excellence. Only 3 percent of the AIA members have this distinction.
I look forward to a successful year for CRAN and our membership and wish everyone a joyous spring.
